It is time for many students to prepare for a new school year. With everyone heading back to class in the next few weeks, it is a great time to remind ourselves that the roads are going to be a lot busier than they were this summer.
Whether students are bicycling, walking or taking the bus to school, it is important to take the right precautions to make sure that everyone gets to school safely!
Tips for students that walk to school.
If your students are walking to school, take some time to talk to them about how to walk on and near roads in a safe manner. If there is a sidewalk available, always use it. If there is no sidewalk and you have to walk along a street, always walk facing traffic. Never cross a street without looking in all directions to make sure it is safe to walk and there are no cars coming.
Lastly, many people assume parked cars are safe to walk in front of. They aren’t! Anyone that walks to school should never walk in front of any car without first making sure that the driver sees that they are there.

Tips for students taking their bikes to school.
If your students are taking a bicycle to school, don’t let them on their bike without a helmet. Anyone riding a bicycle needs to know how to navigate the roads properly and how to follow all applicable traffic laws.
Bicyclists should ride on the right side of the road and when they are traveling with others, they should ride single file. Just like walkers, bicycle riders should always stop and look before they cross the street. The rules of the road can be complicated, so taking a safety class may be a great idea!
Tips for students taking the bus to school.
Students that will be using the school bus to get to school should familiarize themselves with their bus stops. Parents should take the time to talk to their children about the right way to get on and off the bus. (No running, line up in single file lines, and hold the railing when walking up and down the stairs of the bus, etc.) Besides these rules, make sure your child knows his or her school’s policies and rules for riding the bus.
At pick-up, students should never stand too close to the curb. A general rule is to stand at least six feet away from the curb while waiting for the bus. Lastly, if you have to walk in front of the bus to get in, make sure that you walk far enough in front of the bus so that the bus driver can see you and knows you are in front of the school bus.
These are just a few ways that traveling to school can be made safer. The rules of the road in regards to getting to school safely are very important. These concepts may seem simple, but you can never talk too much about safety, especially if it can prevent someone from getting hurt. We wish everyone a safe and happy new school year.
