Distracted Driving: Don’t Do It
How many times have you been driving and noticed another person focused more on eating, talking, or texting instead of focusing on the road and others around them? All too often people forget to focus on the road and end up driving distracted. Drivers who are distracted are much more likely to end up in a car accident than those that are focused on the road. Due to easily accessible distractions such as smartphones and fast food, the number of distracted drivers on the road has substantially increased. Some of the most common distractions include drivers that take their eyes off the road to change the radio, answer a text, or reach down to pick something up. It takes less than a second for a distraction to result in a severe car accident.

If you are driving and believe that you are traveling on the road with a distracted driver, be mindful to keep your distance. Some typical signs that a person is driving distracted is a vehicle that drifts into another lane, suddenly or aggressively over-corrects, or makes sudden stops at stop-signs and stop lights. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates 421,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver in 2012. In many places it is illegal to text and drive, but it is very difficult for police to enforce such laws. Please drive safe and encourage others to not drive while distracted.
