The holiday season is a great time to get in touch and support organizations that care for those in our community. Whether you’re new to North Carolina or were born and raised here, it’s worthwhile to know some of the area’s reputable charities and impactful programs that support our state’s most vulnerable populations.
In the event you are looking for a cause that speaks to your holiday spirit, below is a list and a short description of some of North Carolina’s local charities:
Second Harvest Food Bank
Since 1981, Second Harvest has been distributing food to communities throughout the Carolinas. The organization operates in 14 counties in North Carolina: Anson, Burke, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Rowan, Rutherford, Stanly, and Union.
The main warehouse in Charlotte distributes food to more than 500,000 people living in poverty including nearly 200,000 children and about 40,000 seniors. Second Harvest runs almost entirely on food donations with opportunities for volunteers as well.
Visit Second Harvest Food Bank online to find a donation center near you or to learn more about their initiatives—just one dollar equals seven pounds of food.

Humane Society of Charlotte
The Humane Society of Charlotte has been improving the lives of two-legged and four-legged friends for more than 35 years. The organization’s programming spans from education and adoption services to ensuring the safety and well-being of people and pets in our communities.
There are so many ways to get involved: donate specific items from their online wish list, make a one-time cash donation or sign up for monthly giving, become a foster parent, or adopt a pet in need this holiday season.
If you love animals and would like to become a volunteer, there are plenty of ways to get involved year-round. Visit the Humane Society’s website for more information.
Charlotte Family Housing
A donation to Charlotte Family House is one that deeply impacts our community. Established in 2011, this local organization helps struggling families get back on their feet by offering temporary shelter as well as long-term housing solutions. Improving the lives of our most vulnerable citizens is an investment in the future of our communities.
The shelter is always in need of the following essentials: kitchen items (e.g., plates, bowls, cups, utensils), sheet sets, pillows, comforters and blankets, as well as bath towels, washcloths, and travel-sized toiletries.
In-kind donations can be dropped off at:

Arts & Science Council
The Arts & Science Council (ASC) functions as the Office of Cultural Resources for Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, and several nearby towns. The organization provides important education programming, planning, and fundraising focused on public art, community culture, and advocacy.
Proposed budget cuts to agencies like the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services sends a fearful message to communities across the county: the arts don’t matter—which contradicts countless studies that suggest it has a tremendous impact on young learners.
The council supports several programs for children and adults alike including cultural leadership training, free youth development programs, field trips, and much more. ASC is a passionate advocate for the arts. Visit their website for more information at artsandscience.org.
There are so many ways to get involved with the community this holiday season. Your time or donation is welcome at any of these reputable North Carolina organizations as well as other local nonprofits that speak to your passions, interests, or community concerns.
From everyone at the DeMayo Law Offices, we wish you and yours a safe and memorable holiday season.
